| Joanne Smith As the “First Lady of the Organ,” Joanne Smith’s dynamic personality and unique style have endeared her to fans all over the world. Raised in Marin County, California, Joanne began her musical training on the piano and at age eight she began studying the cello. At San Francisco State College and at San Diego State University she studied piano, cello, and composition, performing with various Bay area orchestras and ensembles. Eventually Joanne applied her musical studies to the organ and she began traveling as a national concert artist in 1984. Joanne and her husband operate a music studio of their own where they currently have more than 140 students. Joanne’s musical presentation comes alive with a wide range of exciting music. BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION • Majored in piano, cello, and composition at San Francisco State University and San Diego State University • Studied organ with Larry Vanucci, Bill Langford, and Richard Purvis • National Concert Artist for organ manufacturers for 10 years. • Taught piano and cello privately for 25 years • Taught organ for 15 years • Ongoing private and group lesson programs with approximately 125 students, including theory/harmony classes, three adult classes, two children’s classes and am currently forming a new teenage master class. • Actively involved in school music programs, including musical show productions, youth orchestras, choirs. etc. • Summers spent at University of Pacific Music Camp. • Played piano with orchestra under the baton of Arthur Fiedler. • Won many scholarships and awards including Junior Bach Festival. • Studied piano for many years with Fred Saatmann, in San Francisco. • Principal cellist with SDSU Symphony for several years. • Began teaching during college years by setting up studio for private lessons, student teaching at Pt. Loma Junior High School and El Cajon Valley High School. • Performed at Asilomar since 1982. • Performed at Paramount Theatre in 1986. Utilizes the new generation of digital technology as well as acoustic for lessons, both group and private. • Records onto disks student progress biannually for review of musical growth. • Student’s lesson material is often recorded onto disks for them to hear at home, helping in areas such as learning tempos, phrasing, dynamics, etc. • Recitals can be digitally recorded. • Duets and symphonic accompaniments recorded onto disks allow for the broader range of musical compositions. • Exciting and innovative technology keeps musical interest at high levels |
