GALVESTON — Amateur pianists who don’t normally get to play a vintage Steinway piano will have that unusual opportunity this month, when Galveston’s Moody Mansion holds its annual free open house.
“It’s a chance to gather the family ’round a fine grand piano, play Christmas carols, enjoy cookies and punch and tour the museum,” said Betty Massey, executive director of the Mary Moody Northen Endowment.
“This is our first Christmas with the Steinway,” Massey said, “and we want to feature it as a major part of our annual holiday open house.”
The vintage Steinway baby grand piano was donated to the mansion last spring by the grandchildren of Thelma Hanslip in her memory. The instrument dates to the 1930s and is in excellent condition.
“You don’t have to be a Van Clyburn,” Massey said, “and this isn’t Carnegie Hall. It’s just a pleasant way to spend a holiday afternoon.
